Here is an easy to do feature routine which can be used for
children, or adults, or best of all for an audience comprising of both!
Seven chairs are arranged in a row in front of the audience.
The magician selects a helper and then shows seven cards –
six are blank, one has a picture of presents on it. The cards are mixed and the
helper decides under which chair each card is to be placed face down.
Seven further children are selected to sit on the chairs. The
helper borrows something of value from a member of the audience – a ring, for
example, and this is dropped into a bag which the helper hands to one of the
children sitting on the seven chairs.
Following instructions printed in a large comb bound book,
the helper directs the bag containing the ring to be passed up and down the row.
The number of times the ring has to be passed is written in the book, but the direction
the ring is passed is left to the helper to decide each time.
Gradually the instructions in the book tell certain people to
return to their places in the audience. Strangely, on every occasion, not one of
the children is actually holding the bag, and not only that but the card placed
under their chair at random at the outset, always turns out to be blank!
At the conclusion, the last person left sitting on a chair is
the one holding the ring, and the picture under his seat is the one of the
presents! How on earth did your helper manage to arrange all that!
